Kannappa Nayanar, one of the 63 Nayanmars (Shaivite saints), is celebrated for his unparalleled devotion to Lord Shiva. Born as Thinnappan, a tribal hunter in Uduppoor (modern-day Andhra Pradesh), he was known for his simple yet fierce devotion. One day, while hunting, he stumbled upon a Shiva Lingam in the forest. Overwhelmed with love, he offered what he had—wild meat, water from his mouth, and flowers plucked with his feet. Though unconventional, his devotion was pure and heartfelt. To test him, Lord Shiva caused blood to flow from one of the Lingam’s eyes. Without hesitation, Kannappa plucked out his own eye and placed it on the Lingam. When the second eye began bleeding, he prepared to offer his other eye, using his foot to locate the Lingam. Moved by his selfless devotion, Lord Shiva appeared and stopped him, granting him eternal salvation. Kannappa’s story reminds us that true devotion transcends rituals and resides in the purity of the heart.
