In the 9th century, Manickavasagar, as per King Arimarthan Pandyan’s command, went to Thiruperundurai in Pudukkottai district to buy fine-breed horses but used the funds to build a temple instead. While staying there, he composed Thiruvachagam and Thirupalliyezhuchi. When no horses arrived, the enraged king imprisoned Manickavasagar. Shiva, moved by his devotee’s prayers, turned forest foxes into magnificent fine breed horses, which amazed the king. However, the horses reverted to foxes, revealing Shiva’s divine play. This event, known as “Nariyai (foxes) Pariyakkuthal (Horses),” is still celebrated in Madurai temple festivals.
