Arappalayam, a bustling locality in Madurai, is linked to a Thiruvilaiyadal story where Lord Shiva helped an old woman named Vandhi. When the Vaigai River flooded, the Pandya king ordered each family to send someone to reinforce the riverbanks. Vandhi, a puttu seller with no one to help her, prayed to Shiva. Disguised as a boy, Shiva offered to carry the sand in exchange for her leftover puttu. However, Shiva ate all the puttu and lay idle at the riverbank, angering supervisors who reported him to the king. When the king tried to punish the boy, everyone felt the pain of the blows, revealing Shiva’s divine form. Humbled, the king sought forgiveness. Shiva earned the name “பிட்டுக்கு மண் சுமந்த பெருமான்” for carrying sand in exchange for puttu.
